The Competitive Masters 40+ - 36 - Week Half IRON Triathlon Training is designed for the Competitive Masters 40+ Athlete who has progressed from the Sprint distance to the Olympic triathlon distance and now desires to race the Half IRON distance, can handle a heavier training load, and has the desire to seek a podium position. To begin this training, you need to be able to complete an Olympic distance triathlon.
This is a structured training plan based on % of heart rate & Power, a Garmin type of device is recommended as workouts can be auto-synced to your device.
Proper warm-up, recovery, and strength training are key to the success of the Competitive Master's Athlete. This plan uses mini-periodization based on a 3/1 structured workout approach; (3 weeks load, with a 1-week active recovery) incorporating proper warm-up, recovery, and functional strength training specifically designed for the Competitive Master Athlete.
During the 24-week Half IRON training phase, you'll begin with just over 7.5hrs of training during your first week, with a weekly max of approx. 12hrs. This HALF IRON plan will focus on base endurance, tempo training, open water swimming, V02 interval training, anaerobic threshold training, endurance track workouts, and will also include progressive brick workouts.
Upon conclusion of this Half IRON triathlon plan, you’ll begin your maintenance training. As a Competitive Masters Athlete, your focus will return to functional strength training, as well as base endurance, with an in-depth focus on technique during the swim training segments and rebuilding your aerobic capacity with the re-introduction to V02 Interval Training.
